French Pass Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand.

SunsetWelcome to French Pass once home of the legendary Dolphin Pelorus Jack. French Pass is situated in the Marlborough Sounds at the top of the South Island. The road from Rai Valley to French Pass was built in 1957. The drive is spectacular. Overseas visitors rate it the most scenic drive in the country surpassing Milford and Queenstown. The road is partially unsealed but in good condition and takes the traveller through forest, farmland and to breathtaking sea views. Give yourself a minimum of two hours for this stunning drive.

The timeless French Pass village sits opposite D'Urville Island and the turbulent piece of water known as the French Pass Passage. Here the water races through on each tide at up to eight knots creating whirlpools eddies and currents, a truly awesome passage feared by mariners. Once navigated by Maori in canoes it proved more difficult for French Seafarer Dumon D'Urville. In 1827 he spent several days investigating the passage and damaged his ship on the way through.

The French Pass settlement is a quiet fishing and farming village with a safe swimming beach, picnic areas and DOC campsite.
